The Doctor and the 4th of July

Since it is the 4th of July, I’m curious what side the Doctor would have been on (or maybe was!) back in 1776.  It seems natural to say that he would help the cause of freedom, but there also seems to be something wrong with him fighting against Britain.  Of course, he probably wouldn’t have gotten involved in the actual fighting, but I bet he would have been there for the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  In fact, I think I’m going to go check the signatures to see if there is a John Smith on there!

I agree that there seems to be something fundamentally wrong if the doctor was fighting against the british. I guess because of the origin of the character. As for pacifism on the Doctor’s part….I could only hope that sometime there could possibly be a story about Cybermen or Daleks involved in the War for Independence. Now that would be entertainment!

Look at what happened with the whole Vesuvius mess. Never mind Captain Jack Harkness going back there to con suckers…

I think if the Doctor turned up, he’d aim to stay out of well documented historical events. The Doctor doesn’t get involved in any political stuff when he visits WWII. He just quietly saves the world from well meaning nano thingies that would have made the Nazis look like Care Bears had they been more ambitious. Talk about a genocide..

There would have to be a major alien threat to justify his need to drop in at the war of independence. I can’t imagine he’d pick visiting a war as a holiday…

Sadly, no John Smith on the Declaration. But, if we switch over to Torchwood… Anyone remember Captain Jack’s ex-bf from the time agency Captain John Hart? Well there’s a John Hart on the Declaration. Captain John could time travel too…

The Doctor was at the signing of the Declaration of Independence, in season 3 special features, a deleted scene on the episode with the Lazarus experiment, he removes the first draft of the Declaration from his suit pocket and explains how he told them to include the bit about the pursuit of happiness!!

Very much looking forward to this book coming out!
